Bought a used car for our daughter and has funky smell in air and defrost????

We bought a 99 VW Jetta and when you use the AC or Defrost a smell comes out. Kind of a stale dirty food smell. Anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of it? Could there be something in the vents??? or tubes leading to vents??? any suggestions???
